A leisure centre has been granted permission to remove a climbing wall and replace it with a space for a spin and activity room.

Roefield Leisure Centre in Edisford Road, Clitheroe, applied for permission with Ribble Valley Council for internal alterations to the Grade II listed ex-coach house, which is a former stables, and is currently housing a climbing wall.

The centre was previously run by Ribble Valley Council but is now managed by a trust, however, it remains council owned.

A planning document, submitted to the council, read: "A report prepared by the manager of the Leisure Centre indicates the need to increase the need for another room and form a mezzanine floor rather than have a non-profitable activity space (climbing wall).

"The change in life styles and the need to become heathier requires services like these to be provided and be maintained and the need is well established and the proposals fit seamlessly into the existing structure without the need for too much alterations.

"The coach house/stables has since passed and was no longer needed for the purpose it was first intended, and would have become a redundant dilapidated unit, far from what it was in its heyday.

"Demand shows the facilities are needed and the building is not compromised in any way, shape or form."

The application states there is ‘a conflict of interest’ between the previous schemes that formed the leisure centre as well as that of the listed building, but the proposals for the works are ‘purely and simply the re-configuration of some internal space within the climbing wall’.

The works would also see the removal of one storage room to make space for the spin room.

There will be some external works contained which will be contained on the northern wall by the puncturing of the metal cladding to allow for air conditioning cassettes in order for the rooms to ‘function correctly’.

Permission was granted by the council last week.
